"The palace of Knossos is one of the most important archaeological sites in Crete, because it was there that the first European civilizations began," says Vita, one of our guides. A native of the local area, she knows a thing or two about the legends and myths surrounding the island's most popular attractions. You'll spend the day watching history reenact as you tour the grounds, before heading to Heraklion to enjoy some free time in the capital.
The Palace of Knossos was once the center of the Minoan civilization in Crete and lies in the heart of what is believed to be the oldest settlement in Europe. You'll take a guided tour of its treasures, stopping at the throne room, royal apartments, frescoes, and more. There's even a chance to see the labyrinth, where the terrifying half-human, half-bull creature known as the Minotaur is said to lurk. With Fast Track, there are no waiting lines.
Then it's time to head to Heraklion, the capital of the island. Take a guided walking tour of the city, seeing the 17th-century Morozini Fountain of the Lions and the 400-year-old Venetian Loggia, which still serves as the town hall. We'll end the day by taking you to an outdoor market to enjoy some free time. Stroll past stalls filled with handmade trinkets and fresh local produce, or stop for a coffee at a local café and watch the people put on. Other must-sees include Koule Fortress and Agios Titos Church.
